About Arles
The traditional Provencal town of Arles lies in the Camargue delta of the Rhone in southern France. Its rich history goes back to the 6th Century BC, when it was founded by Greeks as the town of Theline. The Romans expanded the town, adding an arena, a triumphal arch, baths, an impressive theatre and a canal connection to the Mediterranean. At present, the Roman remains represent the town's major tourist attractions, with the theatre still hosting performances, the arena used for bullfights and the Alyscamps being one of the most sublime Roman necropolises, providing inspiration to numerous artists. Arles has always been an important religious centre as well, hosting no less than 19 church synods. The city's unique ambience made quite an impression upon Vincent van Gogh, who produced some of his most famous paintings here, including Night Café, L'Arlesienne, Starry Night over the Rhone and Yellow Room. To soak up the spirit of Provence, visit the Saturday market in Arles, where you can buy anything from fresh fruit and fish to clothing and handicrafts.
