About Bergerac
"The gateway to the Perigord" - the land of a thousand and one castles, of wine, foie gras and truffles - is called Bergerac, a picturesque town on the Dordogne with a population of about 26,000, a beautiful old quarter and a peaceful countryside covered with vineyards.

The most immediate association that would come to mind would be Cyrano de Bergerac. In fact, the fictional character of Edmond Rostand's famous play had very little in common with the real-life Savinien de Cyrano who was a soldier and a playwright - and never set foot in Bergerac in his life! Nevertheless, the town has "adopted" Cyrano and his statue was recently erected in Pelissiere Square.
