A few words about Lille

Lille was born as a small village founded by the Flemish in 1030. By the end of 11th century it had become an urban and trade center, major fortress of the north fortified by the Count Baldwin IV of Flanders. Since then textile production was started in the city to become, till nowadays, its main industry branch. Along the centuries the town has been under siege for more than 11 times to pass from the hands of Flemish, to French and even Spanish and Austrian. Though its original name is Flemish, the French designation comes from "l'ile" or "the island", as it was first located on an island in the river Deule. Under the rule of Louis XIV the city came to be dominated by France and was turned into one of the most brilliant demonstration of glory and wealth from the golden period of French monarchy. After becoming Flemish again, the city was finally restored to France by the Utrecht Peace Treaty from 1713.

Lille is today beautiful and young-hearted. It has a charming atmosphere of Flemish touch mixed with French flavors in the old town. The new urban part is set in modern style with vast shopping centers and business facilities. In fact the former capital of Flanders is today the fourth biggest city of France and the most important center of the North. In 2004 Lille was Cultural Capital of Europe and considerable investments were made for another glance of brilliance of the fascinating city.

Lille is separated by the Boulevard of Liberty into old and new part. The old town is nestling within the ancient walls and the remains of the old fortifications are a major tourist attraction. It is crossed by winding narrow streets and cobblestone squares, welcoming residents and guests in cosy cafes and charming small restaurants. You will find here the impressive cathedral of Lille, the Opera House and the Musee des Beaux Arts, which is one of the best in France with amazing painting collection from 15th to 20th century. The Citadel has been transformed into a military school and still reminds of glorious times and battles from centuries ago.

The Northern city is warmly welcoming, despite of it's British like weather, especially in the cozy ambience of the local estaminets (taverns or pubs) where traditional specialties can be tasted. Many have fought for Lille and many have had it. Now it welcomes visitors from all ever the world to freely enjoy its charms.
