About Menton
Twenty kilometres east of Nice and close to the Italian border lies Menton, praised as the most beautiful town on the French Riviera. Owned by the Grimaldi Princes of Monaco until 1848, and part of France since 1860, by the end of the 19th Century it was already a popular resort due to its exceptionally mild climate and lack of cold winter winds. The old town lies on a hill and makes a beautiful sight when approached from the sea. Its steep, picturesque streets are lined with buildings representative of three architectural styles: Ligurian, Baroque and Belle Epoque. The town has its share of beaches for the holiday-makers, but undoubtedly the most remarkable attractions are Menton's magnificent gardens. Le Jardin d' Agrumes du Palais Carnoles, located in the former summer residences of the Princes of Monaco, provides the biggest collection of citrus trees in Europe. Other notable gardens in the area include the Spanish-style Fontana Rosa and Maria Serena Garden with its vast collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants. The best time to visit Menton is during the Lemon Festival in February, when huge statues are made entirely out of citrus fruits, and orchestras march down the narrow streets of the historical centre.
