A few words about Rouen
Rouen is the second famous over-Seine city, after Paris. Capital of Normandy, it is one of the oldest and most important cities in France. That is why the French Kings have constantly led battles to protect it and win it back.
Rouen was founded as a city by the Viking Rollo, right after he became Duke of Normandy, back in the beginning of the 11th century. The town was built on the site of a Roman Rotomagus, the lowest point where a bridge could be built on the river. In the 15th century the city was taken by the English and later became the site of the trial and execution of Jeanne D'Arc. After the end of the 100 years war it was again restored to France. Throughout its history the city has suffered devastating wars and destruction. Yet in the 13th century it was almost completely demolished by several consecutive fires and had to be rebuilt. The two world wars left it in ruins. Allies' bombs destroyed almost half of the city and it has been in course of restoration for the last 60 years.
Despite of its unfortunate faith Rouen stands today as one of the most picturesque historical places in France. It has endlessly inspired artists and writers, such as Victor Hugo, who called it "the town of hundred spires" or Claude Monet and his numerous paintings of the impressive gothic cathedral of Rouen. As in Paris, Seine divides the city into right and left bank, and the old town is located on the right bank. It shelters most of the city major attractions, such as the historic area of Rue de Gros Horloge with its old buildings and museums. One of the most interesting museums is the Musee de Ceramique, where an exhaustive collection of porcelain and art objects is presented. Rouen has preserved many of its churches, the most imminent of which is the Cathedral of Notre Dame, an impressive example of later gothic style. The area of the Vieux Marche (the old market) still scents the romantic charm of the past, though it is lively and atmospheric today.
Besides its historical background, Rouen is a dynamic urban center with many young people and progressing industry. It is the 5th largest port in France and capital of the department of Normandy. Set along a beautiful riverside, the city enjoys influx of tourists and business visitors.
